Fleur-de-Lisa
Our history of making music

We have been singing a cappella music together since 2002.

Individually we bring many disciplines together, including jazz, rock, classical
and country. We use all these experiences when we create our unique music.
We have performed in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, throughout
NC and the Eastern US.

Each of us contributes to the writing of our music.
Sometimes we bring something to the group ready to sing,
but often we 'workshop' a piece when someone comes
to rehearsal with a great idea.

Sarah Kenan Shunk grew up in a musical family. An occupational therapist with a penchant for music, she has performed with Mustang Singers at Southern Methodist University, Choral Society of Durham, Chamber Choir of the Choral Society of Durham, Kinetics and the janes. She majored in music composition at SMU and Kenyon College and does the lion share of writing music for Fleur-de-Lisa.

Deborah Stewart has been singing all her life: in church, school choruses, musicals, barbershop groups and several bands. She says her two most recent projects, as lead singer for a roots-based rock band named HWY 54 and trying her hand at writing music with Fleur-de-Lisa's haiku-to-music project, have been her most challenging and rewarding endeavors to date.  By day, Deborah works as a medical Social Worker.

Andie Piddington
is our primary percussionist for the group. She honed her a cappella singing and percussion skills as a four year member of the Intonations at Willliam and Mary College in Virginia. As part of that group and others, she has performed and competed throughout the East Coast, including Orlando, Nashville, New York, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C. She, too, sang with the janes. When not singing, Andie works as an Account Representative for United Door Service and admits to watching way too much TV.

Sylvia Freeman carries on a family tradition of making music. She sang madrigals and jazz in several groups while growing up in High Point, NC. As a teen, she was chosen to sing in choruses at UNC under the direction of Lara Hoggard. While living in Atlanta, she was known locally for her stellar performances of traditional music. More recently she sang with the janes and, on occasion, with jazz pianist Chris Reynolds. She is co-founder of Yoga for Women which meets at Common Ground Theater in Durham.
